Keyless start vehicles use what is called a Proximity Remote.  With an on board power supply a proximity remotes sending/receiving distance is greatly increased to a meter or more (as opposed to centimeters that is in a transponder key system).  This allows the vehicle to read your key, unlock the doors, and start the vehicle, without taking the “key” out of your pocket, or bag.
