I just wanted to Thank-you for everything that you are doing to help the "Little Black Dog". I
have been so worried about her since I have not been seeing her recently. I am glad to
know that she has not been put down, but understand there is still a little ways to go until we
know the full outcome of the situation. The good thing is that at least she is being given a
chance. Thank you so much for the updates on your web-page and let me know if there is
anyway I can help. It warms my heart to see such good work being done.

Our Little Black Dog

My name is Laura Berksteiner and this is my story with our little black dog. On Thursday
afternoon, April 23, 2009 while returning home after running errands, I observed our
neighborhood black dog being tranquilized by two animal control officers, in a fenced area
between Skidaway Rd. and Central Ave. across from Speedwell U.M.C. I felt sick because I
felt that our lives with the little black dog were coming to an end. I (along with many
neighbors, rescuers, and friends) had been leaving food and water for the little black dog to
make sure she didn’t get dehydrated or go hungry. She did not trust anyone to get near
her, as she would always run away. After some time, I realized that my fellow neighbors
were also very affected by the safety of our little black dog. I then felt that I should do my
part. After finding out that the dog would be euthanized I went to the Animal Control office
on Monday April 27, 2009 to request a hold on our little black dog until I could locate the
rescuers. I was told they would hold off on the euthanizing until they heard from me no later
than Thursday April 30, 2009. On Wednesday while on my way to check on our little black
dog, I received a call from animal control telling me one of the rescuers was there and I
needed to speak with her. Everything else is history. My suggested name for our dog is
Lady Sandy.

I was wondering what happened to the little black Sandfly dog, hadn't seen her in a while. I
have always called her "little black dog" and everyone seems to know who that is. I'm so glad
she's going to a loving home!

Black Beauty of Sandfly

Dear Sissy,
Today, May 13th, my daughter informed that she saw a sign in Sandfly regarding "My" black
stray dog. My first response was fantastic! Then, I thought, "Oh no, she's been hit and she's
at some vet's hanging on by a thread!" We went to Sandfly this evening ( I live on Dutch
Island) and jotted down the website address. I was so relieved to find that she's OK and in
the process of being rescued!!!
I first noticed Black Beauty last summer. Two separate times, weeks apart, I saw her
headed down Skidaway in the direction of DeRenne. I was at Ann Green's Hair Salon, both
times. The second time I noticed she was a new mother (swollen mammary glands), and I
thought that even if I tried to catch her, her puppies would be left without her. In the autumn,
I began to notice her at that intersection of Central at Montgomery Crossroads. She was
always alone. I noticed she regularly stayed close to the yard of that one brick house that
sits close by at that intersection. I brought dog food one day to that house and rang on the
doorbell. A sweet elderly lady, Mrs. Luten, answered the door. She told me that she is afraid
of dogs, but her husband leaves food for the dog - mostly stuff out of their freezer. She said
the dog will not come to her husband. She accepted my dog food and said that she
gratefully accepted it and would see that her husband put it out for the dog. She knew the
dog traveled up and down the neighborhood, and that other people fed it too. I kind of got
the feeling that several people were looking out for the dog. I kept an eye out for her
puppies, but never saw any. I tried to approach Black Beauty several times, but she just
could not trust me despite the fact that she was curious about me.
I ended up bringing large bags of dry dog food to the Lutens about 3 or 4 times and bags of
treats. And, I brought one of my own dog's padded, sided, dog beds to put into the Luten's
carport right before the really cold weather hit. All the while I did these things I was thinking
how I had no spine. I knew I should figure out a REAL way to help Black Beauty, but I feared
she may end up put to sleep at Animal Control if I went through the regular motions. I have
my own "rescue" at home, Anna Belle, who has consumed enormous amount of energy and
money. She has separation anxiety and inflammatory bowel syndrome. I am up with her
every two hours at night. That's the norm. (Need I say more?) My husband, although an
animal lover, would not tolerate another rescue, and it would really stress our marriage if I
begged him to take in Black Beauty. I did not know what to do. I could picture Black Beauty
having more litters of homeless puppies. More sadness. I have prayed for her many times,
and have wondered why God allows such sadness for his earthly beings. I promise you, just
yesterday, I said to myself, what would be the odds of God actually giving me a sign that He is
up there caring about his human children and even little stray animals? (We just buried my
cousin's 26-year old son on Sat., May 9. He was a fireman and died of a heat stroke during
training in Texas.) And, today, we see this sign in Sandfly.
I am thrilled. Sissy Rahn, I commend you. ..... my answered prayer and sign from God.
Thank you,
Margaret Paulsen

Hi, my sister lives in Sandfly and sent me your email. On Thanksgiving weekend last year
(2008) she and her husband found a little black puppy with white paws and bib running around
behind the Piggly Wiggly. They stopped, picked him up and brought him home until they could
figure out what to do with him. My husband and I who live in Charleston were down for the
weekend and fell completely in love with him. We took him home with us and to the vet for a
once over. No chip, riddled with fleas and worms, but about as cute and sweet as possible.
The vet thought at the time that he was about 9 weeks old (so born around September 1st).
Jasper is his name and he is adorable. My sister and her husband tell me that your Little Black
Dog is probably Jasper’s mother. Here is the URL for my facebook page with pictures of the
little scamp. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2838&id=291700424&l=4713b52bc7
He is about 8 months old now and weighs about 35 pounds.
We’ll send a donation for Jasper in honor of his mama.
Thanks for taking care of her,
Susan and Steve Hoffius

I have a hand written story from Nancy Rowland to add here.
